As Immanuel Kant proposed with "sapere aude", creating the basis for the Age of Enlightenment, one should "dare to know" . With increasing literacy and education levels all around the globe ever since, this has become a significantly easier task for human beings to pursue. In developed countries, almost all adults have acquired some form of education in the course of their lives. However, current research is still uncertain about what the returns of education are in terms of quality of life and happiness, arguably the goals which are ultimately pursued by everyone and are therefore essential to be included in the literature about education. The link between education and life satisfaction could go through various channels, direct or indirect such as career and income. The author addresses this relationship in an empirical analysis with evidence from a cross-sectional micro-dataset from the Dutch LISS (Longitudinal Internet Studies for the Social Sciences) Panel by investigating the effect of education level on life satisfaction represented by the score on the Satisfaction With Life Scale.This score corresponds to evaluative well-being, a measure of how people rate their satisfaction with life as a whole, covering only one of three components of subjective well-being, the other two being hedonic and eudaimonic well-being. He analyses whether the effects of education on life satisfaction differ by gender and if they are mediated by income and children.
